Subliminal messages
Subliminal messages have been used in music for years. Whether it’s purposeful like back masking, or it’s just examples of reverse speech which happens naturally. It could just be an example of your ears hearing what they want to hear and creating controversy about songs when the so called “subliminal message” isn’t purposeful, and in fact, is nothing but a load of hogwash. Whether its purposeful or not, these strange anomalies of music deserve to be explored and an answer needs to be found.
In the song "My Name is" by rapping sensation "Eminem", There is a subliminal message along the lines of: "Hi! My name is.. (what?) My name is.. (who?) My name is.. {scratches Slim Shady Hi! My name is.. (huh?) My name is.. (what?) My name is.. {scratches Slim Shady"; when played backwards it clearly says: "It is Slim, it's Eminem, it's Eminem, it's Eminem, It is Slim, it's Eminem, it's Eminem, it's Eminem". This is clearly a great example of intentional backmasking because he is saying what his name is backwards which is clever and clearly intentional. In the Pokemon theme song there are famous lyrics that go like: "Gotta catch em all, gotta catch em all (yo), gotta catch em all, gotta catch em all (yeah)"; backwards it is said that it goes like "I love satan, I love satan, I love satan, I love satan". This is clearly a load of hogwash and nothing more. It is an example of people trying to find evil things where they are not to either get attention or scare people into doing what they want, which in this case, is to have people stop letting their children watch popular tv shows like Pokemon. In the song "Empty spaces" by Pink Floyd there is a clear subliminal message in a part of the song where it seems to be indistinguishable gibberish; when played backwards it clearly says "Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your message to old pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont". This is clearly an example of backmasking because when played backwards it is almost as if he is talking forward and you can make out every single word clearly. This is done by Pink Floyd, almost as a joke and making fun of subliminal messaging because it tells you in the message that that's exactly what it is, a subliminal message. In the song "... Baby One more time" by Britney spears there is a supposed subliminal message in the line " With you I lose my mind, give me a si"; when played backwards this supposedly says " Sleep with me, I'm not to young". I believe this is an example of reverse speech in that Britney Spears did not intend to say this, but subconsciously she did intend to because this is what she really thought which in correlation is an example of reverse speech.
In the song "Nature Trail to Hell" by Weird Al Yankovich there is an example of clear backmasking in, what seems to be gibberish, the subliminal message is " Satan eats cheez whiz". This is clearly an example of intentional backmasking because that is Weird Al's form of humor, although it is not funny, and is a great example of backmasking. In the famous song "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen there is a supposed example of a subliminal message in the lines "Another one bites the dust, Another one bites the dust" which played backwards supposedly says "It's fun to smoke marijuana, It's fun to smoke marijuana''. This is a great example of hogwash. This is hogwash because it doesn't even clearly say that line and besides that, "biting the dust" is a common phrase that many people use for people who die so they didn't make up those lines which means, in fact, they did not make that subliminal message. So although the subliminal message is what Queen might have believed, it is just another great example of hogwash. In the song "Hotel California" by The Eagles there is a sublimial message in the lines "In the middle of the night, just hear them say" which listened to backwards appears to say "Satan he hears this. He had me believe". This is another great example of hogwash. The, so called, subliminal message doesn't even remotely sound like that and is just people who like to ruin a masterpiece of a song by putting in devil worshipping messages that aren't there.

Billboard top songs
The top songs of today help define our modern culture and effect how we will be looked back upon by future generations. Choosing three songs to look at in the top 50 list from “Billboard” will give an insightful look into today’s culture. The three songs chosen are: “Run This Town” by Jay-Z ft. Rihanna and Kanye West, “Obsessed” by Mariah Carey, and “Best I Ever Had” by Drake. These three songs are currently located at 3, 6 and 14 on Billboard’s top list and will provide a helpful perspective into today’s modern culture.
The first song being examined is a rap/hip-hop song called “Run This town” by Jay-Z ft. Rihanna and Kanye West. The subject matter of this song is basically who is going to take over as “top dog” and how if you’re not man enough to do it then get out before you’re too far in to turn around. It is also about two men who think they’re ready for the job and give reasons why they would be good and why they desire the leadership position so badly. One line that contains poetic merit is “Who’s going to run this town tonight?” which is basically asking, who is going to take over as “alpha male”. The second song being examined is "Obsessed" by Mariah Carey. The subject matter in the song is dissing a fellow song writer/rapper Eminem, basically saying that the supposed relationship they had never really happened. The song is also saying that even if he was the last man on earth he wouldn't love him. "Tellin' the world how much missed me, But we never were so why you trippin' "? Which is basically stating that everthing that Eminem told the media about their relationship was false and they were never together.
These songs as a whole say alot about our modern American culture. One thing it says is that our needs are now selfish and we have a culture that is completely about themselves and are not worried about what other people think of them. What this says about our us as a whole is that people aren't as interested in poetic devices and lyrical value anymore, but instead love a good beat and a good rhyme scheme. Males are represented as womanizing where as women are represented as strong and independent. Success isn't measured in hard work anymore, but is measured in payroll, amount of women and popularity. This shows alot about our our culture and the direction we are headed in, whether it is good or bad for us as a nation.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.I'm crying.Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.Corporation tee-shirt, stupid bloody tuesday.Man, you been a naughty boy, you let your face grow long.I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.Mister city policeman sittingPretty little policemen in a row.See how they fly like lucy in the sky, see how they run.I'm crying, i'm crying.I'm crying, i'm crying.Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.Sitting in an english garden waiting for the sun.If the sun don't come, you get a tanFrom standing in the english rain.I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.Expert textpert choking smokers,Don't you thing the joker laughs at you?See how they smile like pigs in a sty,See how they snied.I'm crying.Semolina pilchard, climbing up the eiffel tower.Elementary penguin singing hari krishna.Man, you should have seen them kicking edgar allan poe.I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.Goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob g'goo.
analysis:
In the first line of “I Am the Walrus” there is alliteration. The second line is a simile because it is comparing two different things by using the words like or as. The first line of the second verse is imagery because it creates a picture in your head of John Lennon sitting on a cornflake waiting for a van. The fourth line in the second verse is an example of humor because it says random things about being the eggman which does not exist. The second line in the third verse is a play on words because you do not truly know if he is calling the policeman pretty, or he is saying that he is pretty little.
The first line in the fourth verse is imagery because it gives you an image in your head of a dog with yellow goo dripping from his eye. In the second line of the fourth verse is a paradox because usually priestesses are not in to pornographic material. In the first, second and third line in the fifth verse there is another paradox because you get a tan from standing in the sun, not standing in the rain which hardly exposes you to the sun at all. In the first, second and third line of the seventh verse there is all imagery because it all gives you images in your head of exactly what they are describing in the song. Those are all the litery devices in the Beatles smash hit”I Am the Walrus”.

Song analysis
The song I have decided to analyze is Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. There are many poetic devices in this song. There is a paradox in the first verse where it says “It's fun to lose and to pretend” because it isn’t fun to lose it is in fact the opposite. There is also alliteration in the first verse where it says “Oh no, I know a dirty word” because no and I know is an alliteration.
There is alliteration in the line “Hello, hello, hello, hello, how low?” because the hello, hello sound is repetitive. There is a paradox in the chorus where it says “With the Lights out it's less dangerous” because it is commonly known that it is usually safer with the lights on. There is another paradox in verse 2 where it says “I'm worse at what I do best” because you should be best at what you do best which completely contradicts what he says in the song. There is a play on words when it says “I found it hard it's hard to find” because it plays with the order of the words find and hard. Those are all the poetic devices in the song “Smells Like Teen spirit”.
